Suitable Boy, the novel by Vikram
Seth, now inspires a web series. Of late, Web Series has been a new entry to
our life as we begin to use smart phones. Anyway, after about more than two
decades after the release of the Book, someone tries to summarise the humongous
book to a six part series. And the onus of directing such a series has come to
the shoulder of the great director, Mira Nair. Amazingly, the series made by
BBC is an all Indian cast.
The series has been so tight as far
as adaptation is concerned. The script writer Andrew Davies tries his best to
chop all those verbose elements of the book and tries to focus on the central
character, Lata. He deleted so many characters altogether and so many scenes out
rightly. It veers about its central character Lata, for whom her mother looks
for a Suitable Boy. And viewing from that angle, the compacted, Suitable Boy on
screen has been so impressive. But those who have read the novel would describe
the series differently. Sometimes, they find it choppy as well.
But those new viewers of mobile
world, are not into English literature might not have picked that bulky novel
as in the market there is a glut of Young Adult Novel that one finishes at one
go. This section would certainly, enjoy the web series and for this reason solely
it clicked with the younger generation.
Anyway, to adapt, 1500 odd pages to
six hours has been a challenge for the director and the screen play writer. But
Mira Nayar, a director of repute has certainly done her best to veers about the
central character Lata and in all the six parts right from teen to marriage, Lata
dazzles about.
The Chemistry of Ishan Khattar with Tabbu
in the role of Maan Kapur and Saeda Bai has been the talk of the netizens. And
Tanya maniktala, as Lata Mehra, absolutely brilliant like her character in all
parts, she too dazzles. And all these artists with the supporting casts have
done perfect justice to their role.
Those who are yet to read the book
and have a desire, then read it first and then watch the web series or the
other variety those who lack time to read the book, better watch the web
series.
